About the NGE Graduate Assistantship

Goal: To introduce a graduate student enrolled at the University of Georgia to career opportunities in the digital humanities and in digital publishing.

Compensation: In exchange for working fifteen (15) hours a week, the graduate assistant will receive a stipend of at least $16,530.11 and a reduced tuition of $25 per semester.

Qualifications: We welcome applications from advanced graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. Successful applicants will possess strong research and writing skills and an ability to work independently. Familiarity with WordPress, the Chicago Manual of Style, and the broader field of digital humanities is preferred, but not required.

Position Overview: The graduate assistant will work closely with New Georgia Encyclopedia (NGE) staff on all aspects of the publication process. They will review existing entries to ensure that they are fully up-to-date and accurately reflect recent scholarship. They will also author new entries on subjects of need and may be asked to propose new content based on their own research. In addition to these primary tasks, they will contribute as needed to a wider range of activities, including drafting newsletters and social media communications; developing new features; locating primary sources and illustrative materials to complement project entries; and developing supplementary materials for educators. In the course of their work, they will gain valuable experience in digital publishing, learning how online publications are maintained, administered, edited, and promoted.

Term: The 2024-25 academic year runs from August 14, 2024 to May 6, 2025.

Application Instructions: Application materials should include a C.V., letter of interest, and writing sample. Please send all materials, in addition to any inquiries, to the NGE’s managing editor, Dr. Edward Hatfield (edward.hatfield@uga.edu), and its assistant editor, Dr. Anna Forrester (anna.forrester25@uga.edu), by Friday, April 19, 2024.

About the NGE: The NGE is the nation’s first born-digital state encyclopedia. It launched in 2004 and now features more than 2,400 entries and over 7,000 images covering all things Georgia. As an open access publication, the encyclopedia is committed to providing authoritative scholarship to the broader public. All NGE entries are written and reviewed by scholars, fact-checked by University of Georgia librarians, and copy edited by staff members for clarity and concision. Its content is consulted by hundreds of thousands of readers every month, cited regularly by state and national media outlets, and included in curricula statewide.
