Herbert Creecy, an abstract expressionist artist, was born in 1939 in Norfolk, Virginia, and grew up in Atlanta. After graduating from the Atlanta College of Art, he received a fellowship in 1964 from the French government to study with the renowned British printmaker Stanley William Hayter.

Creecy made his home and studio in an old cotton factory in Barnesville, the seat of Lamar County, where he developed techniques in airbrushing with wet paint and in printmaking with polyurethane transfers. His work is represented in the collections of the Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries, High Museum of Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, all in Atlanta; the Telfair Museums in Savannah; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Creecy died in 2003.

Five of Creecy’s works are part of Georgia’s State Art Collection: the four acrylic paintings Cube, Study #8, Study #44, and Untitled #74, and the silkscreen print Study #17.
