Augusta University in Augusta, a member of the University System of Georgia, opened in January 2013 as Georgia Regents University, a consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University (formerly the Medical College of Georgia).
In 2015 the institution’s name changed from Georgia Regents University to Augusta University.
The New Georgia Encyclopedia is supported by funding from A More Perfect Union, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Rains Hall houses the offices of the university president, advancement, and public relations and publications at Augusta State University. The building is named in honor of Colonel George W. Rains, who reopened the Academy of Richmond County after its closure during the Civil War.
